The Story Behind The Cross

“The Cross” was written after sitting in a class on the first and second chapters of First Corinthians. I was stunned by Paul saying that the thing we ought to boast about as Christians is the cross. The resurrection is of course mentioned, but not until the fifteenth chapter! This symbol of immense shame was used by God to bring about His ultimate glory. This wisdom is the power of God to us Christians although it is considered foolishness to the world

This song is based almost verbatim on that text at the beginning of the letter to the Corinthians. It goes on to emphasize some of the most brutal elements of the story of Jesus Christ on the cross. What can we boast about as Christians? Our Messiah is the humble servant, the mighty savior. This song is an invitation to reflect on the power of the cross.

Some Christian theologians have emphasized the sanctifying effects of reflecting on the Passion events. I once read that if someone wants to grow closer to God, a good place to start is meditating on the Passion. This songs flows out of that awe and desire and know God and His wisdom more deeply.
